  Beware of Shoddy Promoters

As the game of 42 gains popularity and the tournament circuit grows, we must be aware that there are folks out there that will try to take advantage of players to enrich themselves. What would be the attraction? Simply stated, The Shoddy Promoter wants to take credit for the growth of the game while feathering their bed. We have experienced this practice in Bridge Tournaments and there are bowling tournaments every weekend that will wind up only benefiting the organizer. Now there are reports of this happening in 42 tournaments.

The difficult part is to determine the difference between the Shoddy Promoter and the legitimate Tournament Director. The N42PA cannot determine this with out your help. So let us give the signs to look for.

1. If the tournament is a fund-raiser for an organization, is that fact made perfectly clear on the Order form?
2. Without an audit, does that Math work? Is the Tournament organizer forthcoming with the financial detail, both income and expenses?
3. Do the rules suddenly change to the benefit of the Promoter? N42PA establishes rules such as Games won will decide winners and Marks are only to break ties.
4. While a tournament is advertised to benefit different organization, do you see the same person handling the Money in various locations?
5. Is the prize fund subject to the Shoddy Promoter’s favorite Line “ after expenses”

N42PA operates several Tournaments each year: four Quarterly Tournaments with membership limits to enter and several Open tournaments open to all members and non-members and the National Tournament of Champions. In each of these tournaments, you will find that our By-laws dictate the manner that the money is handled. With the exception of a small amount of the prize fund that goes towards the National Tournament of Champions, each of these tournaments returns the entire prize fund to the players. Hall rental and a small refreshment expense (Coffee and Donuts) are usually the only expenses that reduce the prize fund.

All of the folks involved in these tournaments are ...

Finding players in each state is a problem that I also would like the answer to. If someone has some good ideas of how to accomplish that, I want to hear from you. I want to start building a list of players from all around the country with their contact information. The goal is to have a National Championship to find the Best of the Best 42 Players Coast to Coast. With this information, I would be able to contact each one personally to: inform of any such events, get help with advertisement in your area of the country, possibly give information of other players in your particular area, or just exchange information about a new strategy or upcoming events around the country. If you would like to have your name added to the list, please contact me via email. I look forward to hearing from you!
